Praised for its sharp dialogue and satiric irony, Mad Men is also known for the effortlessly cool 60s styles sported by its leading ladies. As the hugely successful TV series returns to our screens for a sixth season, here's how to get the look of three of the show's best-dressed characters: Betty Draper (played by January Jones), Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks) and Beth Dawes (Alexis Bledel).

Betty Draper is the jewel in Mad Men's crown. With her flowing summer dresses, monochrome tartan and prim pearls, she embraces her role as the perfect housewife.

To match her more professional side, this tartan tassel wrap skirt from Moloh (£285) and Romilly cable knit jumper from Misguided.co.uk (£16.79) are perfect. Finish it off with these large diamanté pearl earrings from John Lewis (£12) and this gorgeous Jersey Pearl Necklace from Oliver James (£99) for laidback office chic.

Christina Hendricks' style appears simple but is difficult to pull off, usually resting on strong, tailored dresses that perfectly accentuate her hourglass figure.

This selection of Holly Willoughby pencil dresses from Very.co.uk are eye-catching yet adaptable to any formal occasion. This combination, of the ribbed pencil dress (£44) and Miss Selfridge black bow belt (£10) softens her look into a more wearable variation. Add a pair of metallic kitten heels by Love (£35, also from Very.co.uk) and the look suddenly snaps into focus.

Finally, recreate Alexis Bledel's sweetly conservative style with this modern pink silk blouse from H&M (£29.99) and the REISS Mid Grey Tailored Pencil Skirt (£55). Add the Hepburn pearl bridal necklace from Lou Lou Belle (£35) for a chic finish.
