We know the Met Gala is all about the dresses, but that didn't stop its male attendees putting some serious effort into their looks too. With a theme as rich and historic as catholicism, regular suits and shirts just weren't going to cut it and many of the men on the red carpet seriously went to town – crystals, studs and elaborate embroidery were everywhere. A few also made fantastic double-acts alongside their ladies in perfectly coordinated pairings. These are the guys whose looks caught our eye at the Met Gala 2018.

Jared Leto went for full Gucci attire

One of the most talked-about looks of the night was Jared Leto's. The actor bore more than a passing resemblance to Jesus himself in his head-to-toe Gucci outfit complete with Virgin Mary-blue suit and floral brocade stole. He arrived on the red carpet alongside fellow Gucci wearer Lana Del Rey and the label's designer, Alessandro Michele.

Rapper 2 Chainz stole the show not just with his heavily embellished suit and lashings of bling, but by proposing to his girlfriend Kesha Ward on the red carpet. When asked by Complex magazine when he'd decided to pop the question, he replied "about a minute ago". It's certainly one way to make a memorable entrance.

While model Giselle Bundchen went for gorgeous but admittedly rather safe Alexander McQueen dress, her husband Tom Brady upped the ante in a heavily embellished black suit by Steven Seagel. The look didn't go down too well on social media, with users comparing him to a magician or dragon slayer, but we think he deserves points for trying something different.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman really ran with the theme in this incredible custom Versace cape and suit, emblazoned with decadent embellishments. A pair of gold Christian Louboutin shoes kept the overall look fun rather than fancy dress, and a smattering of Bulgari rings added to the glamour.

He may not have been the biggest name on the red carpet, but skateboarder and musician Shaun White deserves a mention for his quirky, retro-inspired take on the theme. He wore a deep green bomber jacket emblazoned with gold peacock feathers and a matching pair of high-waisted green trousers.

We never thought we'd see gigantic diamanté crosses looking chic, but comedian Trevor Noah somehow managed to make it happen. The Comedy Central host dazzled in a Balmain suit, which featured an OTT embellished cross covering his left shoulder and upper arm. A crisp white shirt kept the rest of the look simple.

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes went for a simple yet striking suit in rich, regal purple. He also used the event to confirm his romance with model Hailey Baldwin, and the shade of his outfit perfectly complimented her silver frock and lilac hair. A match made in heaven!
