She may be one of the world's top supermodels, renowned for her incredible figure that has seen her nicknamed 'The Body', but Elle Macpherson has admitted that she struggles with confidence issues. The 51-year-old spoke candidly in a recent interview about how growing older has affected her self-esteem.

Elle Macpherson has spoken candidly about her confidence issues

"It's one thing being 20 and gorgeous with legs up to your armpits and beautiful tight skin… and its another to be 51," she told Sunrise on Wednesday.

"Finally you get to this stage and you say, 'I've been known to be one of the most beautiful women in the world', and felt really not confident and sure of myself," she admitted.

The Australian beauty went on to add that while she sometimes struggles with her body image, the ageing process has also helped her to work out what the most important factor is when it comes to the way she sees herself.

"As I've matured I've realised it doesn't really matter what I look like," she said. "The most important thing is how do I feel?"

It's not the first time that the mother-of-two has spoken about growing older – when she turned 50 last year, she opened up about her early modelling days and how she initially felt out of place when she began conquering the world of modelling.

"If I look at pictures of when I was young, my smile wasn't even genuine, because it was so wracked with self-consciousness," she told Red magazine.

"I don't even recognise myself in some of my younger pictures," she continued. "My legs were up to my armpits with little, skinny arms, before I had the babies, but coming to New York and London [from Australia] I was such a fish out of water and I can see it in my pictures."
