The word 'selfie' has become the Oxford Dictionaries' Word of the Year 2013.

The official definition of the world 'selfie' is "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website".

The 'selfie' has been championed by scores of celebrities. Perhaps the most notable selfie of the year came from Kim Kardashian, who took to Instagram to post a self-portrait of her post-pregnancy body in the mirror.

Victoria Beckham also made waves when she posted a candid close-up of herself wearing minimal make-up.

The first recorded usage of the world was apparently on an Australian internet forum on 13 September 2002. "Sorry about the focus, it was selfie," the post read.
