Prince Edward's wife Sophie Wessex, well into her third month as an expectant mum, has been advised to rest for the time being to avoid complications in her pregnancy. But now friends say the 38-year-old is suffering from severe morning sickness, and has been advised to skip high-profile Ascot festivities – one of the year's most important royal events – in June.

In another development, British newspaper The Sun reports that the Countess, who has also apparently cancelled all official engagements until after the birth of her first child, is due on December 5.

The Prince, meanwhile, has been very supportive of his wife in these early stages, and both sides of the family are thrilled with the prospect of a new addition to the clan. "We're very, very happy," said Sophie's father Christopher Rhys-Jones. "We couldn't be happier – it's been a long time coming. All good things come to those who wait."
