Mega-multi-hyphenate Pharrell Williams has just added another string to his bow – luxury French fashion house Louis Vuitton has named him as its new menswear creative director.

Louis Vuitton described the award-winning music producer, rapper and songwriter as "a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion".

Pharrell's new role will start immediately, and his first collection for the label will be showcased this June at Men's Fashion Week in Paris.

The role was previously held by Virgil Abloh, influential designer and founder of the label Off-White, who died in 2021.

"I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new Men's Creative Director," Louis Vuitton chairman and chief executive Pietro Beccari said in a statement.

"His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter."

Is Pharrell Williams a designer?

Pharrell Williams Karl Lagerfeld

The 49-year-old has spent the past three decades carving himself out as a cultural icon, undertaking a wide variety of different projects – from forming The Neptunes and producing film soundtracks to helping many major artists with their songwriting and amassing a whopping 13 Grammy Awards in the process.

In 2003 he branched out and co-founded streetwear label Billionaire Boys Club with Japanese designer Nigo. The brand is credited with helping increase the presence of streetwear in high fashion, and its aesthetic is largely defined by vivid prints and striking motifs, featured on a wide range of separates – graphic tees, slogan hoodies and utility overshirts to name a few.

Pharrell has collaborated with a range of major clothing brands over the years. He worked with legendary fashion figure Karl Lagerfeld in 2017 to produce a limited-edition line of trainers in partnership with Chanel and sportswear heavyweight Adidas (which retailed at €1,000).

He also is a long-time friend of the Louis Vuitton house, having previously designed a sunglasses line for the label in 2004 alongside Nigo and Marc Jacobs, and so, seemingly he will be right at home.
