According to the Mayo Clinic, vasculitis involves inflammation of the blood vessels which can cause the walls to thicken, reducing the width of the passageway through the vessel. If blood flow is restricted, it can result in organ and tissue damage.

In a sneak peek of an upcoming episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge, Ashton detailed the debilitating symptoms he suffered from as a result of his disorder.

"Like two years ago, I had this weird, super rare form of vasculitis, that like knocked out my vision, it knocked out my hearing, it knocked out like all my equilibrium," he told Bear in the clip which was shared by Access Hollywood.

Ashton made his first appearance since sharing his diagnosis

"It took me like a year to build it all back up," he added of his terrifying health ordeal.

Ashton continued: "You don't really appreciate it until it's gone, until you go, I don't know if I'm ever going be able to see again. I don't know if I'm going be able to hear again, I don't know if I'm going to be able to walk again. I'm lucky to be alive."

After Ashton's diagnosis was revealed, he took to Twitter to clarify his condition. "Before there are a bunch of rumors/ chatter/ whatever out there. Yes, I had a rare vasculitis episode 3yrs ago. (Autoimmune flair up)," he wrote.

"I had some impairments hear, vision, balance issues right after. I fully recovered. All good. Moving on. See you at the 2022 NY Marathon w/Thorn."
