According to the New York Post, the fashion designer was found in her Manhattan apartment on Monday morning.
The 49-year-old was found by her assistant inside the Eighth Floor apartment around 10am New York time. There was no immediate suspicion of foul play.
Fans were puzzled to see that her official Twitter account had been updated at 11am, just one hour after her body was reportedly found.
However, it's likely to be a member of her team – designers often put their social network accounts in the hands of their employees.
L'Wren was scheduled to show her new collection at London Fashion Week last month, but she pulled out just one week before. An official statement revealed that production delays had meant that key pieces would not be ready in time.
Her boyfriend Mick is currently in Australia on tour, according to his Twitter account:

Fellow fashion designer Marc Jacobs was quick to take to his Twitter account to pay tribute to L'Wren.
Rest in peace, L'Wren Scott. You'll forever be missed.— Marc Jacobs Intl (@MarcJacobsIntl) March 17, 2014
