"Donatella is my love letter to Donatella [Versace]," Lady Gaga told JustJared. "The song is an incredible crazy fun pop song with really raising electronic beats that I did with [producer] Zedd.
"It's about being a fearless female and not caring what people say about you – being proud of who you are and walking the walk no matter what."
Versace responded to Lady Gaga's kind comments. "I would like to thank Gaga for her geniality, creativity, incredible talen and super bitchiness," she wrote in an email to the American website.
"I am honoured to be her friend and of course I love the song!"
Lady Gaga said that although her song is similar in subject to Jay-Z's track Tom Ford, her ode to Donatella is more person.
On Sunday night, the singer stunned the MTV VMA awards attendees with a staggering four outfit changes in the space of three hours.
She arrived in a plain black dress that was uncharacteristically simple before opening the awards ceremony by taking to the stage to perform her new single Applause wearing an exaggerated nun's outfit.
She then changed into a black catsuit and donned a yellow and black wig before donning a blue sequin skirt suit with exaggerated shoulder pads.
Her final look of the evening was a daring white shell bikini that stunned onlookers.
The singer has been rocking a more natural look of late. Stepping out in New York to promote her latest tune last week, the pop sensation was spotted wearing a chic summer ensemble.
Minimal make-up and strawberry blonde curls added to the unusual look for the star.
She was greeted by a mass of fans outside the studio, who she affectionately calls her "little monsters", and happily posed with them, even donning a transparent mask that was presented to her.
The songstress contrasted her look earlier that day with an all-black ensemble that showed off her slender figure. She added a touch of eccentricity to her outfit with thigh-high suede boots and colourful, pixelated sunglasses.
