The fashion world is in mourning after losing one of its brightest stars, British designer Alexander McQueen
Following the news of his sudden death
on Thursday, famous friends have been paying tribute to the 40-year-old, whose designs were favoured by A-listers
including Sarah Jessica Parker
, Rihanna and Sandra Bullock
Heartbroken Kate Moss
– a bridesmaid when Alexander 'married' George Forsyth in 2000 - said she was "shocked and devastated" by his passing, and cancelled the launch of her new range of bags.
released a statement in honour of the couturier, named British Fashion Designer of the Year four times, saying: "Today, the fashion industry has lost a true great. An icon of all time. He made all he touched beautiful and will be desperately missed."
"My heart is very much with his family and friends at this very sad time."
Tyra Banks echoed those sentiment, describing his death as a "huge loss", while fellow designer Vivienne Westwood
said she was "incredibly sorry to hear the news."
, who famously wore a £4,000 McQueen dress to her 26th birthday celebrations last year, said: "My heart goes out to Alexander's family and friends at this unbelievably sad and tragic time."
"Fashion has lost one of its most talented and inspirational figures."
And his close friend Sarah Jessica Parker, who was dressed by Alexander for the London premiere of Sex and the City
, added: "I am shocked and overcome with grief about the untimely death of quiet genius Alexander McQueen."
"There has never been anyone like him. And there simply never will be."
Alexander – born Lee Alexander McQueen – was found in his apartment on Thursday morning after apparently comitting suicide.
It comes very shortly after the death of his mother Joyce, to whom he was very close, and just one week before London Fashion Week
He was also due to unveil his new spring collection at Paris Fashion Week in March.
On February 3, Alexander, who was awarded a CBE, posted a message on his Twitter account saying: "I'm letting my followers know the (sic) my mother passed away yesterday…RIP Mum xxxxxxxx". Minutes later he added: "Life must go on."
