Rihanna was the belle of the 2017 Met Gala, according to Lady Gaga. The Costume Institute event at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art brings out the fashion elite every year, and Monday night's bash was no exception, with Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and her sisters, Halle Berry, Katy Perry, and Gisele Bundchen among those turning heads on the red carpet.

This year's ball honoured reclusive 74-year-old Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, the founder of iconic label Comme Des Garcons, and the fashionistas opted for some odd, avant-garde outfits.

Lady Gaga was busy filming A Star is Born with co-star and director Bradley Cooper and couldn't attend, but she kept tabs on all the red carpet outfits, tweeting on Tuesday morning: "Best dressed in my humble opinion was @rihanna #Met Gala captured the spirit of the night & emotion of #Kawakubo #CommeDesGarcons."

The singer also shared two photos of herself wearing Comme des Garcons outfits - one a bright pink and cobalt blue dress and the other a black suit with huge ruffled sleeves.

Gaga wasn't alone in her opinion - other outlets, including Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Us Weekly also named Rihanna one of the best-dressed for her petal-covered Comme Des Garcons couture dress from the 2017 collection. She achieved the same acclaim in 2015 when she wore a long, yellow fur cape by Chinese designer Guo Pei, which Vanity Fair deemed "the year's red carpet-winning dress".

Stars were asked to dress in an avant-garde (modern and experimental) style to pay tribute to the unconventional designer, and while some adhered to the dress code, many did not. Pharrell Williams, an event co-chairman, and his wife, Helen Lasichanh, both wore Comme des Garcons, as did Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross and Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of tragic U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
