She has often stolen the show and become something of a junior royal trendsetter in her adorable collection of pastel pink, baby blue and floral print dresses. So when Princess Charlotte fulfils her first official role, as bridesmaid to aunt Pippa Middleton on 20 May, the eyes of the world will be on the youngster as she walks down the aisle. And while speculation mounts over the style of wedding gown Pippa will choose for her big day, mini-fashionista Charlotte’s dress is also being keenly anticipated.

We're all keen to know what Princess Charlotte will wear to carry out her bridesmaid duties at aunt Pippa Middleton's wedding

Nicki Macfarlane, the children’s party and occasionwear designer, is perfectly qualified to venture a guess: Nicki created the four fairytale bridesmaid and flowergirl dresses for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011. “We’ve been told it is to be a country wedding, so I should imagine that Princess Charlotte will wear a fairly traditional style with puff sleeves and maybe a Peter Pan collar to suit her age,” Nicki exclusively tells HELLO!. “Maybe made in ivory organza with a green sash to follow the country garden theme and keep the look fresh but traditional.

“Given the time of year, I should imagine that Princess Charlotte will wear a flower circlet in her hair and carry a little matching posy. Shoes to match the dress sash would finish the look off perfectly.”

Pippa’s wedding will take place only 18 days after Charlotte celebrates her second birthday, an important detail that Nicki suggests will be carefully considered when selecting a style for the Princess to wear. “Comfort is a must and it’s also important to make sure the dress isn’t too long,” she tells us. “Charlotte needs to be able to run around without worrying about tripping over or getting the dress dirty.”

Nicki designed the beautiful bridesmaid dresses for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011

Recalling the excitement of being commissioned by Pippa’s sister Kate to design dresses for her attendants Lady Louise Windsor, the Hon Margarita Armstrong-Jones, Grace van Cutsem and Eliza Lopes, Nicki says: “It was such an enormous honour. Our brief was for timeless elegance, which I think we achieved.”

Indeed, the exquisite hand-made ivory, ballerina-length pleated dresses, featuring puff sleeves and sumptuous gold silk sashes tied in a bow, were every little girl’s dream. “The design process was huge fun,” says Nicki. “It was also relaxed and very exciting.”
