Fifty Shades Darker star Dakota Johnsonpulled out all the stops for her Oscars red carpet appearance – and it’s earnedher a spot on our best-dressed list.

"Dakota got to play the Gucci trump cardand it paid off,” says Jill. “On anyone else this could have been eek not chicbut, with Dakota’s pared-back hair and make-up, it was perfection.

We rarely see Alicia Vikander in anythingbut Louis Vuitton – and for good reason! The star presented an award lookingstunning in the French fashion house’s creation.

“Sticking to the flamenco vibe, Alicia’sdramatic black lace dress had a rise and fall hemline paired with ankle strappysandals, relaxed up do and a Bulgari diamond necklace. Glamour with an edge –nailed,” says Jill of Alicia’s look.

It was all eyes on young actress HaileeSteinfeld as she lit up the red carpet in Ralph & Russo. “Hailee took onthe dress straight off the Paris runway and mastered it beautifully,” saysJill.

“The star wore the delicate confection ofsheer frills and florals with Neil Lane gems, matching metallic lilac nails andconfidently slicked-back hair to show off the high neckline. She proved she’smost certainly coming of age in the style stakes.”

Emma Roberts put an emphasis on environmentallyfriendly fashion for her Oscars appearance. “Emma chose a two-tone vintageArmani Privé gown in collaboration with the Red Carpet Green Dress initiative,”says Jill.

“To modernize the archive piece (a sartorial nod to her aunt Julia’s2001 look dubbed the ‘skunk dress’), she wore her strawberry blonde waves witha striking red lip and Atelier Swarovski jewels.”

We loved Ruth Negga’s unique Oscars look! “She’sout latest style crush, and Ruth predictably wore a very non-traditional Oscardress,” says Jill. “The actress chose not to flash any flesh but instead toshine in this scarlet modest high neck, long-sleeved Valentine Haute Couturedress.

“She topped it off with custom-made IreneNeuwith for Gemfields jewellery set with ethically sourved Mozambican rubiesand an ACLU supporting ribbon, showing she’s the thinking woman’s style icon.”

We were delighted to see Olivia Culpo, oneof our favourite HFM cover stars, grace the red carpet. “Olivia was anotherguest to choose dramatic fringing – this time in Marchesa. She had teamed upwith the designer and non-profit Water.org in support of their clean drinkingwater campaign.

“The dress, inspired by cascading water, was worn with a sleek, blunt low pony tail and contrasting black nails, clutchand delicate velvet ribbon belt. Olivia oozed confidence and did her bit for a verygood cause at the same time.”

Karlie Kloss was another guest showingsupport for the American Civil Liberties Union with a blue ribbon quirkilypinned to her hip. But it was her stunning outfit that got tongues wagging. “Karliewas the picture of elegance in this Stella McCartney caped back column dress,”says Jill.

Another star to take on white was NaomieHarris, who stunned in Calvin Klein. “Naomie championed sports luxe for her redrug moment and we totally approve,” says Jill.

“With her very own take on high lowfashion, the sequined cutaway Calvin dress was cocktail length at the frontwith a long train at the back. Worn with hue de jour yellow and mis-matchedsandals, it was a playful take on fashion.”

Felicity Jones had her very own princessmoment at the Oscars this year. “Felicity looked part sugar plum fairy, partStrictly, but in a good way,” says Jill.

“The oyster Christian Dior Couture dresswould have looked frumpy on anyone else but on our English rose, it was quitecharming. The ballroom gold sandals and bare neckline were a welcome touch –Felicity was most definitely wearing the dress and not the other way round.”

It was the biggest night of Emma Stone’slife – and she made sure to pull out all the sartorial stops. “Emma chosefringed Givenchy Haute Couture and Tiffany & Co jewels,” says Jill.

“Scooping her Best Actress Award for La LaLand demanded a show stopping dress and this hit the mark. The bead-encrustedbody and gentle swaying fringing was made for dancing and boy, we bet she did!”
