He's used to dressing the stars for movie premieres, but Tom Ford has reportedly teamed up with George Clooney to conquer Hollywood from behind the camera.

The designer will direct Nocturnal Animals, with George and his Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov reportedly producing the film.

The designer already made waves in the world of directing, receiving critical acclaim for his film A Single Man in 2009 which starred Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.

This new project will see him direct Nocturnal Animals, an adaptation of Austin Wright's book Tony and Susan

The novel follows two parallel stories, one about a man whose family holiday descends into chaos, the second about a woman looking back on her failed marriage. Tom recently revealed to WWD that despite his highy successful career in the world of fashion, he was still keen to step into the world of directing once more.

"I have a few I could do if I had the time to shoot them," he said, talking about films. "Yes definitely, I'd be very sad if I don't make more films."

The designer also sparked speculation that he was working on a book-to-film adaptation at the time after he compared the two art forms. "A book is a book; a film is a film," he said. "They are totally different things. Sometimes things are subtle in a book because there's an inner monologue with the character, and turning it into a film, you don't have that inner monologue – unless you do, which I don't love. "You have to have something personal; you have to take what speaks to you about a book and amplify that. It's impressionism, in a way."
